The enteric nervous system (ENS) is one of few nervous systems in humans that can actively regenerate and replace lost neurons following injury. Yet the mechanism behind this regeneration and if replacement of neurons recovers homeostasis is unclear. This is particularly interesting in the context of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), wherein the ENS appears to go through cycles of injury and regeneration. Of note, patients with IBD have intestinal dysfunction akin to IBS even in inflammatory remission, suggesting the ENS may play a role in long term disease morbidity. Alterations in ENS function due to post-injury regeneration could furthermore be an active contributor in IBD flare progression due to disruption of neuroimmune signaling networks. My research therefore aims to elucidate how new enteric neurons are made following injury and how injury alters ENS function.
