Welcome to the Louis V. Gerstner Jr. Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSK). We offer comprehensive training in biomedical research, with a focus on cancer. Our mission is to educate the next generation of scientists to make discoveries that will further our understanding of human disease.
Cancer is a complex disease that develops when normal biological processes fail. Understanding cancer, and thinking about new cancer therapies, requires a broad knowledge in biology. At GSK, our students explore cancer science through a wide lens of basic, clinical, and translational research.
We use innovative, discussion-based approaches to teach a comprehensive curriculum that includes molecular, cellular, and developmental biology; stem cell and tissue biology; immunology; and the biology of cancer and other diseases.
In their first year, students develop important career-building skills, such as the ability to generate and test hypotheses, think quantitatively, and critically analyze research from different disciplines. They also rotate through three of the more than 120 laboratories at Memorial Sloan Kettering before deciding which one they would like to join. The immersive experience is an important step in determining the research discipline they ultimately choose to focus on.
Our world-renowned faculty offers students crucial mentorship support throughout their education at GSK. This includes one-on-one guidance around their dissertation research as well as a clinical apprenticeship designed to help develop perspective on how their benchwork can be applied to patient care.
GSK is an exciting place where basic science and clinical research come together. We hope that you will come here to discover with us.
