Mechanisms of tolerance to “bona fide” placental antigens

Our field’s understanding of fetomaternal tolerance to placental antigen largely stems from mouse models where the trophoblast cells express model antigens, like the chicken ovalbumin model. We are investigating whether similar or different tolerance mechanisms govern the maternal immune response to true placental antigen, such as paternal MHC and the “oncofetal antigens” which are expressed during fetoplacental development and may be re-expressed in neoplastic cells.
