Ulrich Hammerling

Ulrich Hammerling, PhD, is an emeritus member of the Immunology Program in the Sloan Kettering Institute. In his more than 45 years of research, he has made numerous contributions to our understanding of the function of vitamin A and its derivatives, including the connection between vitamin A and PKC function in the electron transfer chain in mitochondria.

In addition to his many important scientific contributions, Dr. Hammerling has also made important programmatic contributions to MSK. Over the past 40 years, he has been teacher and mentor to many talented MD/PhD students, who have gone on to establish successful independent research careers. From 2001-2012, he was the Director of the Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis PhD Graduate Program, a joint program with Weill Cornell.

Dr. Hammerling received his degree in medicine from the Max-Planck-Institute for Immunobiologie / University of Freiburg, Germany. He did his postdoctoral training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and in 1971 joined the faculty of Sloan Kettering Institute.
