The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is a joint program with house staff members who rotate in two- to four-week blocks to obtain exposure to quaternary oncology at a world class academic cancer center. House staff rotate from affiliate institutions with whom MSK has established relationships across New York City, including:

• State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center/King’s County
• The NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital network (including NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Brooklyn Methodist Hospital)
• Mt. Sinai Morningside/West Hospital (formerly St. Luke’s-Roosevelt)
• The MediSys Health Network (including Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and Flushing Hospital Medical Center)

We host up to 25 interns and residents from our affiliate institutions monthly.   

House staff from the Rotating Internal Medicine Residency Program work in conjunction with MSK’s transitional year interns to deliver care to patients on our inpatient services. Educationally, our goal is to provide a broad-based, well-balanced program of graduate medical education in the field of internal medicine and its subspecialties to facilitate the choice of and/or preparation for a specific specialty. Our inpatient and outpatient services include tremendous diversity and depth of pathology, and the acuity of our inpatients affords an excellent education in the principles of inpatient hospital medicine.

We provide competency-based medical education and measure the growth and progression during education and training of house staff using the six core competencies developed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The core competencies include patient care and procedural skills, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice.

The clinical disciplines involved in the education of medicine house staff rotating through MSK include:

• Gastrointestinal Oncology
• Genitourinary Oncology
• Leukemia
• Lymphoma
• Solid Tumor Oncology
• Thoracic Oncology

Each team is led by a single attending physician with expertise in the specific cancer(s) or a board-certified/board-eligible hospitalist with longitudinal experience in working on that particular inpatient medical service.  We also provide a diverse educational curriculum in other cancer subtypes, supportive (palliative) care, and subspecialty medicine as it relates to the special needs of cancer patients to supplement the educational experience. The Department of Medicine’s Chief Residents lead case-based morning report conferences to discuss dynamic cases unique to our institution for trainees and medical students. 

Chief Resident Program

Annually, we select three Chief Residents at the PGY-4 level to manage the educational and administrative needs of all residents from our rotating program, in addition to the interns from our traditional year program. Our Chief Residents are graduates of one of our affiliated institutions and have previously rotated with us during their residencies. We have a highly competitive process to choose the most talented residents who are interested in developing their leadership and teaching skills and are either fellowship-bound and/or have an interest in a career in academic medicine.

Graduate Medical Education (GME) Elective Program 

We provide different opportunities for elective rotations at MSK. This includes clinical (outpatient) and research electives, which are available for resident trainees from affiliate institutions, as well as a limited number of elective opportunities for residents from non-affiliated institutions. The length of the rotation varies depending on the type of elective and the needs of the trainee. 

Options for clinical electives include general outpatient oncology, bone marrow transplant (BMT), and medicine consultative services, including, but not limited to, cardio-oncology and supportive care. Research electives are available on a restricted basis and are only available to those who have previously rotated at MSK. Research electives require approval from a MSK research mentor. 

We also offer specialized elective opportunities for qualified candidates. For example, the Ferguson Nazareth Diversity Clinical Scholars Program. This program was created to offer residents who identify as part of an underrepresented group in medicine, as defined by the National Institutes of Health and Association of American Medical Colleges, an opportunity to gain exposure to the various cancer-related disciplines at MSK through a visiting elective.

All electives require an application process, followed by a credentialing process (including inter-institutional agreements). Applications must be completed and submitted at least three to six months in advance.
