Description of program

Social isolation and loneliness have lasting and detrimental effects for older adults. Research has shown that social isolation and loneliness play an important role in mental and physical health as well as prevention and progression of these diseases and conditions. This course prepares the practitioner to understand the importance, recognize risks as well as key care components in the optimization of an older adult’s social and mental health. Practitioners will learn how to address this with their older patients and appreciate valuable resources to support their patient.  

Objectives include

  • Understand the difference between social isolation and loneliness
  • Appreciate the health risks associated with social isolation and loneliness in older adults
  • Learn techniques in how to address social health with older adults
  • Connect with valuable resources in the community for older adults suffering from social isolation or loneliness
