Gerstner Sloan-Kettering Clinical Program

The clinical component of our PhD program is available for those students who wish to gain an in-depth understanding of the intimate relationship between the laboratory and the clinic.

The goal of the clinical program, which is an important and unique aspect of the Gerstner Sloan-Kettering curriculum, is to encourage students to develop a clinical perspective as to how benchwork can be applied in the clinic. This perspective includes an understanding of the following:

  • The clinical lexicon
  • The workings of clinical trials
  • What is or is not a significant clinical result
  • The difficulties of proving efficacious treatments
  • The peculiarities of specific diseases and how human physiology can dictate the mode of intervention
  • The various mechanisms and technologies that exist for the development of new innovative treatments
  • The challenges clinicians face in the clinic

An important aspect of integrating basic and clinical sciences is developing an appreciation of the human side of disease, observing real-life challenges faced by clinical practitioners, and understanding the gap between a good idea in the laboratory and its execution in the clinic.
In the second year, students may continue to engage with clinicians with one or two clinic visits during the fall semester of the second year. Then, at the end of the second year/beginning of the third year and after advancement to candidacy, students have the option to participate in a clinical apprenticeship. As part of this program, students select a clinical mentor to guide them in translating the clinical applications for the basic science project of their choice.
