Blood Stem Cell Transplantation at Memorial Sloan-Kettering
The story of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's transplantation program demonstrates the importance of collaboration among clinicians and basic research scientists. Since 1973, when Center physicians performed the first successful transplant of marrow from an unrelated donor, Memorial Sloan-Kettering has been a leader in bone marrow transplantation. Gerstner Sloan-Kettering faculty members are playing a key role in advancing the program's success.

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Investigators Show How Key Growth Factor Influences Immune System
Memorial Sloan-Kettering investigators Joan Massague and Dori A. Thomas have published a paper showing how the protein called transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) allows tumor cells to escape killing by the immune system. TGF-beta has been a well-studied cellular protein in cancer research because it can act as either an inhibitor or a promoter of cell growth.

News About Our Faculty

Alan Hall Named Cell Biology Program Chairman
Memorial Sloan-Kettering has announced that English biologist Alan Hall will become the new Chairman of the Cell Biology Program within the Sloan-Kettering Institute. Dr. Hall is responsible for uncovering much of what is known about several key proteins that control the pathways regulating cell motility and shape, as well as how cells' internal structures (cytoskeletons) are organized.

Faculty Members Are Honored
The World Technology Network awarded the 2005 WTN Award in Media and Journalism to Gertsner Sloan-Kettering Graduate School President Harold Varmus and his colleagues at the Public Library of Science. Joan Massague, faculty member and Chairman of the Cancer Biology and Genetics Program, is among the recipients of the 2005 New York City Mayor's Awards for Excellence in Science and Technology. And faculty member Steven Larson has been elected to the Institute of Medicine.
