Am I eligible to apply to the program?

We invite applications for the summer undergraduate research program from undergraduate freshmen, sophomores, or juniors who are contemplating a career in biomedically related sciences.

Applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and should have completed at least college-level courses in general biology and/or introductory chemistry.

What are the admissions criteria?

The criteria for selection includes:

  • the student's undergraduate record;
  • two letters of recommendation;
  • and the applicant's inclination toward research as demonstrated in the application materials.

What are the areas of research available to SURP students?

The SURP mentors are drawn from departments and research programs of both the Sloan-Kettering Institute and Memorial Hospital. These include eight Institute research programs: Cancer Biology and Genetics, Cell Biology, Computational Biology, Developmental Biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Pharmacology and Chemistry, and Structural Biology; as well as the Hospital's departments of Medicine, Pathology, Pediatrics, Radiology, and Surgery, and the hospital-based Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program.

Our faculty conduct research in all areas of biomedical sciences including developmental biology and genetics; signals and pathways involved in the control of cell proliferation; cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and protein targeting; tumor immunology, immunotherapy, and transplantation biology; genomic integrity and human cancer genetics; drug development, drug resistance, and clinical therapeutics; and chemical biology and structural biology; among others.

When does the program start?

The summer undergraduate research program begins on the first Monday in June and runs for ten consecutive weeks.

What is the application deadline?

The final deadline for the receipt of ALL application materials is February 1. All materials for the admissions file must be submitted and/or postmarked by this date. Students are encouraged to submit their application and all supporting documents as early as possible.

Application for the 2008 summer program has closed.

When will I find out the status of my application?

You will be notified of a decision on the status of your application between March 1 and March 15.

You will receive an e-mail message notifying you of a decision on your application.

How much is the stipend?

The stipend is $3,000.

Is housing available?

Yes, housing accommodations are available in close proximity to the Center for those students who require housing.
